Get ready for prices of everyday items to leap after Trump announces a 50% tariff aimed at bullying Brazil

Convicted felon/adjudicated sexual abuser/President Trump announced a 50% tariff on all products imported from Brazil starting August 1. If he carries through with his tariff threat, the price of many common consumer goods, including coffee, orange juice, sugar, beef, cocoa, soy products and other products could jump sharply.

Trump’s main purpose in enacting the tariff is to punish Brazil for prosecuting its former President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been charged with a large number of crimes including carrying out an attempted coup ďétat to overturn election results in 2022, running an illegal spy ring targeting his perceived political enemies including critics, journalists and police officers who investigated corruption while he was in office, engaging in vaccination fraud, jewel smuggling, abuse of power by making false statements about his country’s voting system and the accuracy of voting machines, attempting to skim money off of his aides’ salaries, undermining democracy and spreading false news.

In a July 9, 2025 letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Trump wrote, in part,

“I knew and dealt with former President Jair Bolsonaro, and respected him greatly, as did most other Leaders of Countries. The way that Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, a Highly Respected Leader throughout the World during his Term, including by the United States, is an international disgrace. This Trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY.” [Incorrect capitalization is from original letter.]

The U.S. imports about 30% of its coffee beans from Brazil. Other products from Brazil that face significant price increases include iron and steel, vegetables, fruit, nuts, tea, wood, electronic equipment, mineral fuels and oils, paper, wood and wood products, pharmaceutical products, medical equipment, shoes, cement and more.

In his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised Americans he would make groceries more affordable, stating in December, 2024, “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.” Instead, the price of many everyday goods are rising as Trump uses tariffs to try to bully other countries into following his extreme right wing ideology.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva said that if Trump follows through with charging the 50% tariff on August 1, he will retaliate by levying a 50% tariff on goods imported to Brazil from the U.S.

The U.S. exported $53.8 billion worth of goods to Brazil in 2022.

    1. When the president, who is a convicted felon and sexual predator, brings up Barack Obama time and time again, then you know he’s doing everything he can to distance himself from Epstein, who he had close ties with for many years. Both films on Epstein featured on Netflix show Trump and Bill Clinton with Epstein and young girls throughout the documentary. Then there’s the victims, probably at least one hundred of them. There’s no denying Trump was all in with Epstein.

    2. Right on! A President who admittedly boasts about sexually assaulting women, who pays off, and threatens the minor daughter of an adult film actress with whom he’d had sex (while married) needs deep investigation. But THAT President is NOT President Obama.

  1. Beef prices are already at record highs over of $6/lb.

And of course one of President Groceries’ most popular campaign promises was to lower food costs.
