Restore the Balance calls out a 5-alarm fire. People had better listen before we lose the U.S. to a dictator.

Restore the Balance (RTB), the non-partisan Grand Junction-based nonprofit that fights political extremism, sent out the following email on September 2, 2025, and asked for help to amplify their message, so I am reprinting it here.  RTB also ran an equally grave open letter to CD-3 Rep. Jeff Hurd in the Saturday, August 30, 2025 edition of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, which is also reprinted below.
RTB’s ad and open letter reflect the extreme frustration Hurd’s constituents are feeling with the way he has been completely failing to address the real issues hurting the District and how Hurd been completely failing to call out and check Trump’s many violations of the Constitution and law, as well as Trump’s refusal to follow court orders, his destruction of entire agencies key to Americans’ safety and security like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Education and others. Hurd has completely failed to call out Trump’s intentional erosion of our country’s relationships with key allied foreign countries, his chaotic and illegal tariff pronouncements, his willful violation of law to improperly use the military to over-police and intimidate residents of American cities with Democratic mayors, and Trump’s use of his elected office to threaten, bully, extort and intimidate businesses, law firms, universities and individuals.
And that’s is just a partial list of Trump’s transgressions of law and norms. It doesn’t even mention his staggering levels of corruption and leveraging of his office to enrich himself.
This is arguably the most urgent advertisement RTB has ever placed, and for good reason: because authoritarianism now poses an extraordinarily urgent threat to the our country under convicted felon/sexual abuser/president Donald Trump, all while Rep. Hurd  whistles past the graveyard and is afraid to address it.
Here is RTB’s email:

CD3 Citizens: Speak up! Join Us!

In the eight months since Jeff Hurd has taken office, He has done little or nothing to recognize or counter the dictatorial actions of the Trump administration. He has been virtually inaccessible to the general public.  While he touts his many tours around the Third Congressional District meeting with special interest groups, citing the many wonders of Western Colorado, and “bringing home the bacon” approved by the previous administration, the general public goes ignored.  Hurd has yet to conduct an in-person Town Hall.  His virtual Town Halls are not widely published, and invitations appear to be limited to only those subscribing to his newsletter.

Many of you have expressed concerns with Hurd’s inaccessibility and his compliance with the dictatorial nature of the current presidential administration. Over the last three months, RTB has attempted to contact Representative Hurd to share our concerns and to offer our assistance in hosting a forum through which he could connect with his constituents.  Contacts with Hurd and his staff have generated no result.  In the meantime, the President and administration continue to deny Americans their civil rights, make a mockery of Congress, and violate innumerable tenets of the Constitution. Hurd’s silence

Colorado CD-3 Congressman Jeff Hurd voted to eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the source of important news and information shows like All things Considered, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition and Fresh Air (Photo: Facebook)

constitutes complicity with the Trump administration’s violation of the Rule of Law and its efforts to dismantle the democracy.

The RTB board felt it critical to call out Hurd for his passivity and thus has expressed our sentiments in an open letter to the Congressman placed in print, posted to social media and shown below. If you agree, we need your help and support in this call to action.  Things you can do to help:

1) Contact Congressman Hurd in person at one of his offices, via phone or email and state your concurrence with our letter.
2) Write your own letter to the editor requesting action by Hurd. (Please copy us at
3) Share your letter (or ours) with your friends and contacts.  Invite them to join us in urging Congressman Hurd to do his job and honor his pledge to uphold the Constitution of the United States.
4) Post your comments and spread our message on social media.Thank you for your help and support.

Here is RTB’s open letter as it appeared in the August 30, 2025 edition of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel:

One Rep. Hurd’s many evasive happy time Facebook posts, and, as RTB says, of one of his “many tours around the Third Congressional District meeting with special interest groups, citing the many wonders of Western Colorado, and ‘bringing home the bacon’ approved by the previous administration, [while] the general public goes ignored”:
Comments underneath the post uniformly express anger and frustration with Rep. Hurd’s behavior in office
Here is a sample of some of the 43 comments Rep. Hurd’s constituents left on his above post:

  1. Thank you for including the Sentinel article and for making the salient points about this elusive representative. I have called his office 3 times, and have never received a reply. Only once did I reach a staffer.
