Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, widely considered to be the least qualified Defense Secretary in U.S. history, posted a tweet on his personal X account on November 30, 2025 that used an apparent AI-generated image of Franklin the Turtle, a beloved children’s book character, to make fun of his acts of murdering unidentified people in boats in the Caribbean.
So far at least 80 people have been killed in bombing strikes on boats in the Caribbean, boats that Hegseth alleges without proof were transporting drugs to the U.S.
Legislators from both parties are now raising alarms that Hegseth may have committed a war crime after the Washington Post reported that in September Hegseth ordered an unusual second strike on a boat to kill kill two people who survived the initial bombing.
The Washington Post reported on November 28 that two sources said Hegseth allegedly “gave a spoken directive” to make second strike on a boat to “kill everybody” who remained alive after the vessel was bombed by the U.S. military on September 2.
