Pope Leo recently condemned the worship of mortals and money, the pitfalls of arrogance, the “absurd and inhuman violence” unleashed in the war on Iran that has been destabilizing the Middle East. Leo also said that “Jesus cannot be used to justify war and that God rejects the prayers of those who start conflicts.”
Convicted felon/sexual abuser/President Trump took those statements as personal attacks, and in return attacked the Pope in a long social media screed in which he assailed the Pope as “too liberal,” “weak on crime” and “weak on nuclear weapons.” Trump said the Pope “needs to stop catering to the radical left” and said the Pope “needs to get his act together as Pope.” Along with his written critique against the Pope, Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus Christ with a glowing orb in his hand, ministering to a sick person lying in bed in a hospital gown, along with an American flag, fighter jets, eagles, nurse, combat soldiers and fireworks in the background.
Trump’s criticism of the Pope drew backlash from around the country and around the world. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said “I find President Trump’s words regarding the Holy Father to be unacceptable,” adding that it is “right and normal that he should call for peace and condemn all forms of war.”
Trump told reporters outside the White House that he would not apologize for the post.
Soon after, though, Trump removed the Trump-as-Jesus Christ image from it, while keeping the long written screed insulting the Pope.
