Sign up to get immediate alerts about new ICE immigrant detention prisons coming to your area

You can now sign up to get an immediate alert if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is planning an immigrant detention center in your area. Go to this website to sign up: GTFOICE.org (Get the Facilities Out ICE dot org).

The website and service came about as the result of a collaboration between three organizations: the Save America Movement, DEFIANCE.org, and Project Salt Box (“Helps neighbors prevent ICE.”) The new website launched on April 23. Tens of thousands of people have already signed up to get alerts:

The Save America Movement Action Network is a nonpartisan, citizen-led group whose mission is defending democracy and opposing MAGA extremism. It is led by figures like Steve Schmidt, who worked as a former a Republican strategist for 30 years before dropping his Republican Party affiliation in 2018 to oppose Trump.

DEFIANCE.org is a 501(c)4 group founded by Miles Taylor, a former government security expert who worked for the government during Trump’s first term, and who was subsequently targeted by Trump after anonymously authoring a 2018 opinion piece published in the New York Times titled “I am part of the resistance inside the Trump administration.”

Project Salt Box is based in Baltimore, Maryland. Its founders are public records enthusiasts who closely monitor the Department of Homeland Security and its sub-agencies, including ICE, to find out what they are doing behind the scenes and get word out to the public about it to keep the public informed so they can act.  Project Salt Box’s description says,

“In Baltimore, bright yellow wooden boxes sit on residential street corners, stamped with the words “SALT BOX.” They are a staple of our civic infrastructure: citizen-forward and open for public use. The concept is simple. Community members can use these resources to keep their neighborhood streets and sidewalks safe and navigable for everyone.

Project Salt Box applies this same philosophy to federal transparency at a local level.

Government procurement and infrastructure development are often confusing and opaque. We gather these public documents, research them, and tell their story so that Marylanders can understand federal developments before they become permanent fixtures of the local landscape.”

There are resources on the GTFOICE.org to help spread the word about their service, including graphics and links to social media sites like Instagram, X, Threads and others.
