Trump calls housing affordability bill “a big yawn;” Texas Republican House Rep. dismisses affordability as a problem

When asked on Monday, June 29, 2026  if he would sign the bipartisan housing affordability bill that the House and Senate recently passed, Convicted Felon/SexualAbuser/President Trump called the bill “unimportant” and “a big yawn” and said the SAVE (“Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act), his voter-suppression bill that makes it harder for certain Americans to vote, is a far higher priority for him.

The housing bill, called “The 21st Century Road to Housing Act,” a major bipartisan achievement amid an extraordinarily divided Congress, was designed by legislators to address the dire U.S. housing crisis by boosting the country’s housing supply and keeping institutional investors from bulk-buying up large swaths of single-family homes in neighborhoods across the country to use as rentals for investors.

Housing has become far too expensive for many Americans to afford. Rents have increased more than 30% nationwide, and home prices have risen almost 55% since the start of the pandemic, reducing many Americans’ ability to afford shelter.   This is happening at the same time that the federal government has cut housing vouchers and other federal programs that previously helped homeless people afford housing.

When Republican House Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas was asked about the majority of Americans who say they are struggling with financial difficulties, Nehls answered that he is planning to eat lobster tails and ribeye steaks for the 4th of July. He dismissed any concerns about affordability and inferred that Americans who can’t afford to eat the same pricey foods as him simply aren’t working hard enough:
