Sophie Wilson is one of the most influential trans people in history.
She is the British computer scientist who led the development of ARM architecture, the original instruction set for the high-energy efficiency, low heat-generating computer processors that now make smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers and other computing devices possible.
ARM stands for “Advanced RISC Machine.” RISC stands for “Reduced Instruction Set Computer.” ARM originally stood for Acorn RISC Machine, as Dr. Wilson designed the Acorn microcomputer that was released by the British company Acorn Computer in March of 1979. Acorn computers became staples in British schools, helped countless people learn how to program computers and kick-started a thriving British computer game industry.

The technology Dr. Wilson developed is now present in over half of the world’s consumer electronics.
While Acorn Computer was dissolved in 1999, its most important contribution — the ARM processing architecture developed by Dr. Wilson — grew into the British semiconductor and software giant ARM Holdings, a global tech company whose products now power billions of modern computing devices like smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and laptops.
In 2011, Dr. Wilson was ranked #8 on Maximum PC’s list of the Fifteen Most Important Women in Tech History. (Maximum PC was a prominent computer magazine published from 1995-2025 that reported on cutting edge technology.)
Dr. Wilson is a transgender person.
Sophie Wilson was born Roger Wilson in 1957. By 1978, Wilson, who then was known by the single name “Wilson,” was a soft-spoken math and computing undergraduate with long hair whose only commercial achievement had been building a specialized electronic device for feeding cows.
She medically transitioned via gender reassignment surgery in 1994 to become Sophie Wilson.
She is one of the most highly respected electronic designers on Earth.
She is also an inspiring reminder for people who are made to feel outcast for being “trans” and for those people who ignorantly minimize the worth of trans people as fellow human beings, that no matter who you are and what people may think of you, you can excel at what you are good at and even bring tremendous benefit to mankind.
And if you are one of the people who minimize the worth of trans people, you can now thank Dr. Sophie Wilson for each and every one of the average 186 times you likely check your smartphone every day.

As always, thanks, Anne. Part of the GOPs plans is to target minority groups. Demonize them. Stigmatize them. Blame them. Harm these humans.
It works for VP Vance. It works for Stephen Miller, for MAGAs, just as it worked for Hitler. No one names their child Adolph. Or Donald.
