Group petitions District 51 to use stronger Covid-19 protocols this fall

National news report on July 27 says current guidance is that all teachers, staff, students and visitors to schools should wear masks regardless of vaccination status, especially indoors in Covid hot spots. Mesa County is a Covidhot spot for the more contagious Delta variant.

Supporters for Open and Safe Schools (SOS), a group of Mesa County residents who are alarmed by the lax Covid-19 prevention protocols School District 51 put in place for this fall, is challenging the District’s “2021-22 Keeping Schools Open Plan” as insufficient to keep students and the surrounding community safe from COVID outbreaks and school closures amid a continuing pandemic.

District 51 announced its “Keeping Schools Open” plan on July 16, but the plan does not require students or staff to wear face coverings. Instead it makes masking optional, lets unvaccinated visitors onto schools grounds without wearing face coverings and only encourages, and does not require, staff and students over 12 years to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Currently children under 12 are not eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine, making them more susceptible to infection, especially with more transmissible Delta variant that spread rapidly in Mesa County after the County Commissioners ended all Covid protections in the county last spring. Currently only 43 percent of Mesa County adults over 12 years of age are fully vaccinated, far lower than the statewide average of 54 percent.

Mesa County has already had one pediatric COVID death.

Petition pressures school district to update COVID protocols

SOS started a Change.org petition asking District 51 to “align with and abide by national and state agency guidelines for health and safety protocols in regard to COVID-19 for the 2021-22 school year.” Those protocols include:

  • Mandatory face masks for students, staff, and visitors entering any School District 51 school building until vaccines become accessible to school-aged children (ages 5-11)

  •  Daily disinfection of facilities

  •  Adequate ventilation systems for each School District 51 school building

  •  Frequent hand washing

  •  Cohorting

  • Physical distancing

The petition cites the COVID guidance currently recommended for schools by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE), the American Academy of Pediatrics, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Colorado Department of Education. The petitions was drafted with the help of a pathologist at St. Mary’s Hospital.

The Mesa County Medical Society on July 28th also urged the school board to rethink its protocols. School District 51 Board member representing District E, Amy Davis, is a physician.

CDC’s Guidance for Covid-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools published on July 9 says “masks should be worn indoors by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not fully vaccinated. Consistent and correct mask use by people who are not fully vaccinated is especially important indoors and in crowded settings, when physical distancing cannot be maintained.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics saysAll students older than 2 years and all school staff should wear face masks at school (unless medical or developmental conditions prohibit use).”

  1. The more pressing matter is that the catholic church is a pedofile cult. That bastard Mccarrick.

Moms and dads need to wake the hell up. The christian faith offers jesus. What they are really offering is comfort and authority – laziness and subservience. And people buy it. They LET themselves be traumatized with that SH!T ABSURDITY. Those bastards destroy our kids from the get-go, and for an entire lifetime.

The Squad must shut down christianity before those bastard christians kill our species and countless others.

  2. Highly unlikely that you will have the courage to post these links but maybe you will at least check them out and then maybe you’ll understand why people are hesitant to vaccinate their children. The mask thing is just stupid- any thoughtful person that has followed the mask recommendations from the beginning has to question-from Dr. Fauci himself-
    1st no masks
then yes a mask- then 2 masks, then no mask if your vaccinated – then yes a mask if your vaccinated- mask outdoors then no mask outdoors then now a mask in doors-

think about it – Country jam 20K people unmasked- where was the outbreak
Los Colonios outdoor concerts no masks – where’s the outbreak

Show me the data that shows that children are a greater risk for covid- not just one 15yr old that no other information regarding being at more risk is presented- just like the local girl here who just happened to be severely overweight- perspective Ann?

This is about fear mongering-and control not about the health and safety of our children- where is your expose about the number of kids that have committed suicide since the masking and the shutdown- what about increase in substance abuse?

    • Karen,
When did you last eat, you are being hysterical. Have some potatoes, the starch might help.

    • Hi Karen:

Science changes. Evidence comes in, hypothesis get adjusted accordingly. Turn off the news–its not helping you. Just because you don’t like the science doesn’t mean you get to cancel science or the scientist. And for god’s sake quit politicizing everything. That’s Satan’s way and it will bite you in the arse eventually.

  3. If you want your child to wear a mask, have them wear a mask. Use common sense and be responsible, if masks work, what is the problem. If you don’t want your child in school because of masking, stay home and educate them yourself, the resources are there. Let people make there own choices.
