Yesterday’s mail brought a glossy new promotional magazine called “Grand Junction Lifestyle.” Given the cute kid and baby animal pictured on the cover, one would hope the lifestyle they’re trying to promote would be a healthy one. But instead, upon opening the front cover, readers are served up a two-page ad promoting one of the biggest corporate criminals and polluters on Earth, the Chevron Corporation:
Chevron has an extensive history of committing not just environmental crimes, but lots of other crimes, too, including crimes against workers and governments. The company has engaged in kickbacks and bribery, evidence tampering, fraudulent oil cleanups, wage and hour violations, tax violations, clean air and clean water violations, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, federal leasing royalty violations, MTBE violations, workplace safety violations, solid waste disposal violations and much, much more. Chevron’s list of crimes is global, extremely long and goes back for decades.
Even worse, St. Mary’s Medical Center, which claims to “put people first” and care about health and safety, is complicit in helping minimize Chevron’s extensive criminality by “partnering” with them to advertise a $25,000 donation Chevron gave the hospital, thus and helping the corporation promote its “humanity.”
The ad amounts to cheap PR for Chevron, a stain on the reputations of both St. Mary’s and the magazine, and an embarrassment to the entire community.
Chevron supports CMU as well with a lot of conservation greenwashing. The yearly water symposium there at CMU is sponsored by Chevron. They slip into academia with conservation clothing like sheep.
Intermountain which bought St. Mary’s a few years ago is a very conservative and large hospital chain that goes after the competition wherever they show up. Some care at St. Mary’s is decided not by medical science but by religious beliefs. They are advertising a lot now and will try to drive Community Hospital out so they can raise their prices. Please avoid St. Mary’s and support Community.
All of the article descriptions of the operational shortcomings of Chevron are as we know -Environmental Destruction which has Crimes Against Humanity equivalence.
The SMH staff member(s) who processed this donation did not do relevant research and/or, just did not care about the origin of this Cheveron ( dirty ) $ .
I doubt if St. Money’s even noticed.
Disappointing
Chevron needs a new tagline:
A Really Hideous Company That Sometimes Does Nice Things.
