CO House Rep. Matt Soper (R-District 54) posts & then deletes controversial comment on Jimmy Carter’s death

Colorado House Rep. Matt Soper posted this comment about the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Twitter/X at 11:51 p.m. on 12/29/2024, the day Carter died. Soper deleted the comment shortly after, but not before a lot of people noticed and got screen shots of it.

Shortly after deleting the comment, Soper deactivated his “X” account entirely:

Soper then apologized for his crass comment on Facebook, vowing “to everyone be a better person”:

Soper’s apology on Facebook with a vow to stay off “X”

One must be concerned about whether Soper can be a better person, though.

Soper has a track record of lying to constituents:

Soper won his House Representative D-54 seat in 2018 under dubious conditions.

Published articles revealed Soper lied to the Secretary of State about where he lived in 2018, listing the address of a rental house his mother owns as his own residence in order to meet the residency requirement to hold the House District 54 seat. In truth, an unrelated family had lived in the house for years, and after one of the occupants swore in a legal affidavit and publicly in the Daily Sentinel that Matt Soper did not live in the house with him and his family, Soper had his mother evict the family from their long time home as retribution for publicly telling the truth that Soper did not live there.

Also, on May 16, 2020, Soper lied about coronavirus deaths to citizens at a rally in Delta, and inferred to the crowd that the King of England used a smallpox pandemic during the Revolutionary War as an “impetus to try to contain Americans.” He told the crowd that the oppressive use of the smallpox pandemic to sideline Americans and keep them indoors “was explicitly in the Declaration of Independence.”

It’s not.

The Declaration of Independence is a very short document and contains no references to anything dealing with smallpox, a pandemic, forcing people to stay home, stay out of the streets or not assemble publicly due to a pandemic, and it contains no mention of the King or anyone else using the smallpox epidemic to oppress people in any way.  The Delta County GOP had originally posted a video of Soper openly lying to the crowd that day, but has since deleted the video.

If you’re in Soper’s district, then he is your representative…

…and you might want to consider electing someone who doesn’t lie, who is not a knee jerk extremist and doesn’t make awful comments without thinking that require public apologies afterward.

Soper’s District (54) is the yellow area in the map below, and his email address is matthew.soper.house@coleg.gov

If you live in the yellow area in the above map, Soper is your Colorado state House Representative. His district includes Clifton, Fruitvale, DeBeque, the towns of Mesa, Collbran, Fruita, Loma, Mack, Glade Park, Palisade, Whitewater, Gateway, the western side of Delta County and most of the town of Delta proper

  1. I hope Kamala Harris has picked out a nice pantsuit to wear tomorrow when she will have the honor of certifying the electoral votes for Donald Trump.

    Lucky girl!

    • I’m thankful the Democrats don’t cry and scream, “Stop the Steal.” Can’t say the same for your team. Are the elections suddenly fair because your side won? And yes, Kamala looks great in pant suits! All you have to hang onto is an old wrinkled orange grifter who has hired billionaires to run our country, and so far, it’s not looking good. President Musk is off to a bad start.

    • I’m gonna like watching Trump whine about the flags being half-mast, to honor a far better man than he or any of his lackeys will ever be.

  2. Mat Soper and his mother evicted a disabled veteran, one who had no resources to fight eviction. He lied on his voter registration and his candidate affidavit. The Republican Secretary of State at the time, concealed and abetted him in this crime. This post just proved what a scumbag Soper is, and he should have never been seated in the State House.

  3. Why are all the nut jobs from Mesa County? First, we had Katherine Phillips, the doctor from Community Hospital & her low-life thug boyfriend harass the Five Guys fast food workers, calling them Beaners, then we had the whack-job cab driver attempt to murder our sweet newsman, Ja’Ronn Alex, and now we’ve got Matt Soper, another stupid, hate-filled Republican. It just gets worse by the day to be from Mesa County.

    • …and don’t forget former County Clerk Tina Peters, also a convicted felon, and County CommissionerJanet Rowland, who spent taxpayer money on a personal vendetta, and Steve King (former CO House rep who is also a convicted felon on embezzlement charges).

  4. The Soper comments about President Carter were totally unhinged.

Carter was probably the most moral man to ever be President. He never aspired to be a tyrant as Trump does. He never used his office to sell sneakers, bitcoin, or NFTs for self gain.

Soper is clearly a MAGA propagandist and must be voted out.

  5. Being a republican is a disease. Matt thinks if he makes comments like he did that many of his constituents will love him more. He’s not wrong about that.

  6. Hilarious, Anne.

You have made a career out of making vile comments about politicians.

There’s an oft quoted phrase that seems appropriate at this moment.
“If democrats didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all.

    • That’s all you’ve got, isn’t it, scumbag? “Nuh-Uh, You!”?
Man, every time Repukes lower the bar, you manage to slither under it, don’t you?
As seen from the reaction to your Klan Bro, Patrick, people in Mesa County are willing to push back against you and your ilk.

      Perhaps that’s why you’re so butt-hurt.

  7. 1. Soper should have tried to be a better person back when he got the renters kicked out of his mom’s rental house.
    2. Assertions about “destroying the US” are just farts in the wind without an explanation of why he believes that to be true. It certainly left me wondering what he was talking about.
    3. Pro tip: If you don’t want to receive hate-filled commentary, a good strategy would be to not give any.

It amazes me that our local GOP can’t come up with better candidates than this. And that this district votes for the folks they run anyway.

    • The local GOP reflects the spirit and values of their voters; hate-filled, spineless, willfully ignorant (and bafflingly self-righteous) goons who take vicarious pleasure in crap like this, and the attack on the young reporter.
