Trump, governing as an authoritarian, publicly portrays himself as king, dictator

Actual Trump TwitterX post from Feb. 19, 2025

Instead of signing legislation passed by Congress — the normal way policies are made in U.S. — Trump has been continuously circumventing Congress’s power by writing a slew of executive orders, signing at least 70 of them as of February 20. Trump has essentially been governing not as the president of a representative democracy, but as an authoritarian.

What Trump wants goes, and no one else’s opinion matters or gets any consideration.

Even more worrisome, in the last week Trump openly likened himself to a dictator and a king.

The post above is from an official White House social media account, not from a parody or Trump’s personal account. It’s on an official government account for the White House, an official document. It refers to Trump’s interference with a new congestion toll policy instituted by New York City to reduce extreme traffic congestion in the busiest part of Manhattan, and it’s one of Trump’s unprecedented efforts to inject his interference into local issues.

On February 15, Trump posted the following quote, widely attributed to the French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte:

Trump sees himself as a savior who is above the law

And on February 21, Trump raised the idea of his running for an unconstitutional third term.

These are not the acts of a person who believes in safeguarding democracy.

One month into his presidency, Trump has put the country into a constitutional crisis

A constitutional crisis is when a president systematically commits unconstitutional and illegal acts and defies established laws and judicial rulings. That describes Trump’s behavior since his inauguration on January 20.

Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the University of California, Berkeley Law School, said February 7 that the country is currently “in the midst of a constitutional crisis,” adding,

“There have been so many unconstitutional and illegal actions in the first 18 days of the Trump presidency. We never have seen anything like this.”

A partial list of Trump’s unconstitutional and/or illegal acts include:

  • Revoking birthright citizenship,
  • Freezing federal spending,
  • Shutting down federal agencies that were created by Congress without Congressional approval,
  • Removing leaders of federal agencies,
  • Firing government employees who are subject to civil service protections,
  • Threatening to deport people based on their political views,
  • defying a court order to release federal funds,
  • defying a U.S. Supreme Court ruling by ordering the Justice Department not to implement a law congress passed in 2024 requiring the Chinese social media app TikTok to be sold or banned by January 19, 2025, for national security reasons. Trump said ordered the DOJ not to enforce the law because he has a “unique constitutional responsibility for the national security of the United States.” Trump effectively put himself above the law.

Pamela Karlan, a law professor at Stanford, said “Up until now, while presidents might engage in particular acts that were unconstitutional, I never had the sense that there was a president for whom the Constitution was essentially meaningless.”

  1. I’d rather have lived under George III. No kings in the USA, Donnie! I’d hate to see you succeed like Louis XVI.

  2. I come for the articles and stay for the comments…and I come to try to understand the liberal mind.

I think I knew a lot already, but recently I have come upon a new revelation.

You people lack imagination. You look at someone like DJT and because you don’t like him, you can’t fathom that *anyone* could like him. You refuse to acknowledge that although half the people voted for him, he has any appeal other that appealing to the most base instincts people possess. That’s how you square the circle.

So you make your little signs and go out to street corners and chum around with people who think just like you do and believe MSNBC because they reinforce the notion that Trump voters are icky and ignorant.

It must be hell to live in a country where so many people are icky and ignorant.

    Thoughts and prayers.

    🙂

    • I don’t like Trump because he’s a fraud, an egomaniac, a proud committer of sexual assault, a traitor to the interests of the free world, and, at his core, a staggeringly weak man, when he’s dealing with anyone who isn’t a boot-licking toady; which brings us to why we know exactly why someone like you likes someone like Trump.

You think he’s strong, because he gets away with his behavior. He gets away with it because people like you want to attach themselves to him like a remora, and hope to co-opt his perceived “strength”, so you can act like he does; but the thing is, you can’t. This county is red, but it ain’t all red.

Which is why people with their “little signs” bother you so much. They’re not afraid of people like you, or Trump. They push back, which neither of you are comfortable with.

      • Remora (noun):”a slender marine fish which attaches itself to large fish by means of a sucker on top of the head. It generally feeds on the host’s external parasites.” — Oxford English Dictionary/Oxford Languages.

    • I’d like to say that we can’t fathom how anyone could like him, but the answer is obvious. Those that like him aren’t getting the whole story. Thirty years of Fox News and other incredibly biased sources have trained people like you to only accept what you want to hear, and ignore anything else as “fake news”. You don’t know what he’s really doing because your sources won’t tell you and you reject the sources that will.

But it is hell to live in a country where so many are ignorant, and willfully so.

    • For me personally, the people who I know who voted for King Felon 47 are people who are not opposed to lawlessness and stomping on others’ rights. They have a disregard for our constitution so long as King Felon 47 gives them what they want and a big part of that is not to lose their privilege in society. My guess is that you are an old codger, someone who is used to being privileged in our country. You are scared. Scared and threatened of illegals who are not afraid to work multiple jobs to try and get ahead in our country. You are scared because they will be a big voting block in our country. Reading all of your replies on this blog, I can easily tell you are very insecure. You will deny it, but it’s very easy to see.

  3. I wonder what you would call a senile, corrupt president who allowed twelve million unvetted, illegal immigrants into our country, made the taxpayers pay for their upkeep and whose unelected minions lied about the whole fiasco.

You leftists don’t have a leg to stand on talking about principles, norms and rule of law and anyone with a brain knows it.

      • Your disingenuous offer to “talk” is laughable. I have happily provided you proof in the past…under the impression that you are an honest broker. I subsequently learned that you have no interest in honest discussion. You are a flim-flam artist like the rest of the goof balls around here, although you make a half assed effort to appear otherwise.

If you want to know about the recent invasion of our country and Joe Biden’s mental incompetence, turn on the TV. They surely have one at your facility.

And watch Anne howl when people start getting sent back in huge numbers and crying about the cruel and unusual DJT.

        • What do you think of the latest poll numbers on Felon 47 BadHat? Doesn’t look too good. Half of the Felon 47 voters were already not in love with him as much as someone like yourself, and now they are regretful and embarrassed. I agree with John, you are not a respectable citizen and I would love to get in on the wager!

          • Well, if you agree with John…what more is there to say???
            🙂
I don’t pay attention to polls. I’m pretty sure there was one a while back that said Kamala Harris was a shoe in.

Trump was voted into office. I know this is inconceivable to people like you and you’re going to spend a lot of energy trying to do something about it.

The big indicator as to how effective you have been will be the midterms. That’s one of the reasons Trump is moving so fast on his agenda presently.

        • Your “sources” are biased and one-sided. They are lying to you, but you don’t care because they are telling you what you want to hear. How many investigations did the Rebublicans have trying to find some evidence against Biden, only to find, time after time, nothing? All you have are accusations and we all know it. It didn’t work against Obama, and it didn’t work against Biden.

On the other hand, Trump was convicted of thirty-four felonies, and it would have been a lot more if he hadn’t been elected again and shut the investigations down. His crimes are obvious to anyone who actually cares about the truth, but you don’t. You just want to “own the libs”, which is what you think you are doing here. What you really are is a laughingstock.

          • Your concern for my reputation is touching.

I have noticed, however, that you take every opportunity to “feed the troll”.

Your obsession belies your purported disdain.

Personally, I don’t need your responses. I know you don’t like me and I don’t care.

    • Congratulations, Harry – you’ve surpassed every prediciton of how low you’d actually go to defend your Dear Leader, no matter what he does or says.

Trump joins with Putin against a US ally, and you defend him.
Trump calls himself a King, and publishes it via the White House, and you deflect.
There’s no direction you can take but down, alongside the pathetic con man you worship.

This is probably why a centrist sockpuppet (we’ll call him, “notasbadhatharry”) has appeared, to claim they “don’t care for Trump, but Dems are even worse, you know…” because you’ve realized the hole you’ve dug, and that there’s no way out of it.

Again, this is why I have some hope for the dark days ahead; most of Trump’s most avid supporters are like you – badasses online, complete cowards when confronted; and I assure you, there are plenty who will confront you and your ilk, even in mostly red Mesa County; because a lot of people who voted for him are just embarassed.

    • I would call a President who is not named Trump an ex-president. I know some don’t recognize Trump as their president, but I think they are justifiably voicing resistance.

I noticed that you did not refute Anne’s claim. I know, it is hard to do so this time. So I can only conclude that a Constitutional crisis, a power grab for authoritarianism is justified in your view because of bad acts of a previous President. It is hard for me to recognize you as a respectable citizen.

I believe that support for Trump is drying up quickly. We can disagree, but lets get some skin in this.

I would like to see you suffer financially and be humiliated publicly. I propose that we wager on future outcomes. We can start with the mass deportations which you believe to be imminent. If we can find someone willing to escrow our wager … Anne perhaps … then the winner gets forwarded the losers money. She gets an escrow fee for expenses and to support the site.
      What says badhat?

      • Only a fool of the first order would give a troll like hairy any more information than they already have about them. Let him go beg Elon for someone’s banking info.

        • Oh, Seamus. If I can’t find common ground with you, how can I hope to find some with Badhat. I don’t think I am exactly a fool. Calling me spineless hit home a little closer. I do switch sides, and I have no backbone for either party. I have declared my past voting history and what touches me personally and why I cast my votes.

I have also been a little too hard on you. I do consider you a respectable citizen, and no hard feelings.

Now I am going to direct Scotty to beam me up, and hand the torch over to you fine people. I will respond to Badhat’s acceptance of wagers.

          Slava Ukraini !
