The name of Grand Junction’s Cesar Chavez celebration has been changed to the Sí Se Puede Celebration

After the New York Times published an article on March 18 about how civil rights icon Cesar Chávez had groomed and sexually abused girls in the movement, events across the country celebrating farm workers were either called off or organizers scrambled to change the names of their events. Grand Junction’s event has been renamed the Si Se Puede Celebration. It will be combined with the third No Kings Day protest on March 28. The No Kings protest starts at 11:00 a.m. on 3/28/26 at the Butterfly Pond at Las Colonias Park by the Colorado River.

  1. Grand Valley citizen

I just finished watching Frank Capra’s 1939 masterpiece film again, i.e., “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, with James Stewart in the lead. It resonated with me, and gave me hope that protests such as our No Kings marches across the world can eventually make a positive difference . . .

  2. I was there, it was depressing. Organizers apparently forgot that all the farm workers either got deported or are too afraid to leave their homes. There was no conflict of events and there wasn’t much of an event, period. Speakers apparently forgot that this was not supposed to be about patting themselves on the back and campaigning in very politically correct terms. Attendees apparently forgot that protesting Trump’s grift is not accomplished by selling anti-Trump merch. Grand Junction proper didn’t need to forget, they just remained blissfully unaware since it all happened out of public view. I didn’t stay long. Very different vibe from previous No Kings protests. I hope we get back to the protest part of protest.

    1. My wife and I were there. People were happy. Smiling. Agreeing that The Cult of the Orange Turd has to go. We shared military service and care for our community. We celebrated Jesus’s tenets which are NOT those of Musk, Rep.Hurd, Pres. Epstein-Trump, and today’s GOP. We were together, recharging.

Sometimes we don’t have the perfect venue, but we play the cards we are dealt.

      Happy Easter!

  3. I agree with Chuck, terrible location due to low profile and too many events going with terrible parking. No Kings needs to be a standalone event. Too much effort for too little payoff. I’m going biking instead.

    1. Suboptimal location, yes. But I have a critical mass of signs, all ready to go. We must tell Epstein-Trump and Stephen Miller NO KINGS!

I get the feeling that the city of Grand Junction has successfully relegate the No kings march to oblivion. marching a half mile or less from the butterfly lake to the amphitheater to celebrate with the si se pueda? Give me a break.

    1. I don’t think it was the City’s decision to have the NK3 protest in that location. I think Indivisible GJ was concerned about stepping on the Latino festival by having to have the No Kings event — a huge one — on the same date and time as the Si Se Puede festival. Indivisible didn’t want to tank the Sie Se Puede fest. Remember the date of No Kings 3 was set by the national Indivisible group, not by the local group, so Indivisible had to find a thoughtful way to deal with the conflict. I think they really were trying to do the least harm.
