Free help for small businesses to recoup money they were forced to pay for Trump’s illegal tariffs

In a 6-3 decision in February (2026), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that convicted felon/sexual abuser/President Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs were illegal. The Court ruled that the sole power to impose tariffs and tax Americans lies with Congress, not the President, and that Trump had illegally sidestepped the law and Congress by claiming there was a fake economic emergency as his basis to impermissibly impose the tariffs.

After the ruling, the federal government had to figure out to how to refund the $166 billion in tariffs it had illegally seized from American businesses. It took several months for the government to prepare a system to refund the money.

Yesterday, Monday, April 20, the federal government opened an online portal where businesses can apply for refunds for the illegal “Liberation Day” tariffs Trump had forced them to pay.

Large corporations have accounting divisions which make it easier for them to apply for tariff refunds, but small businesses are at a disadvantage since they have fewer resources and less expertise at their disposal to navigate the refund process.

Enter the Liberty Justice Center (LJC), which brought the successful lawsuit against Trump’s “Liberation day” tariffs. The Liberty Justice Center is now offering free help for smaller businesses to recoup tariffs. They started Project TERRA (“Tariff Equity and Refund Resource for America”), to create “a straightforward roadmap to recover unlawful tariff payments.” Right now, Project TERRA is gathering contact information for small businesses that need help. The LJC promises to “move fast to help businesses get what is rightfully theirs,” and claim back what they paid “clearly, quickly, and at no cost for using our resources.”

If you own a small business that was hit hard by tariffs and don’t have a big accounting department to help you recoup them, apply for free help at Project TERRA to recoup the funds you were illegally forced to pay the government.
