What planet is Jeff Hurd living on?

Republican CD-3 House Representative Jeff Hurd is running Orwellian TV ads in which he claims he has been working “to keep us safe and lower our cost of living.”

Well, maybe Jeff Hurd isn’t spending enough time in Colorado to know what people are really going through here, and if he actually has been working on those issues, he’s been doing a terrible job.

Hurd is lowering the cost of living? That’s a laugh.

Over the last 12 months the Consumer Price Index rose 3.8% nationally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Consumer Price Index is the most well-known index of inflation. It measures the price of a fixed basket of goods and services typically consumed by U.S. households.

As of one week ago, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Colorado was $4.66. One year ago the price was $3.15, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). Trump’s unnecessary war on Iran has sent the price of gas through the roof. Why won’t Hurd acknowledge that?

Congressman Jeff Hurd smiles while posing with convicted felon, adjudicated sexual abuser and murderer of over 100 people in the Caribbean (without due process or evidence), Donald Trump.

A Brookings Institute research report dated 5/27/26 says

“In 2024, 45.5% of U.S. households did not earn enough to make ends meet,”

…and in Colorado specifically, only 51.9% of all families with 1-4 kids is making enough to make ends meet. For Latino families, that number falls to 32.8% and for Black families it’s even lower, at 28.6%. The Brookings Institute called it a “crisis” that “stretches from coast to coast.”

The cost of living in Colorado is 6% higher than the rest of the country, and the cost of housing in Colorado is 11% higher than the national average, according to data collected by RentCafe in March, 2026:

Data from RentCafe collected in March, 2026.

Safe?

An October, 2025 report by WalletHub found the Colorado ranks among the least safe states in the nation. A July 21, 2025 report found that Colorado ranks among the least safe states specifically for public education, a rating the state earned due to severe classroom violence, staffing shortages and high anxiety among students and school staff about gun violence.

No wonder that’s the case. Active shooter drills have become part of life for students in Colorado schools, and firearms were the leading cause of death among young people ages 1-17 in 2023, according to Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. The overall death rate in Colorado from firearms increased by 36% from 2014-2023. Hurd and Republicans haven’t acknowledged that or lifted a finger to address that problem.

That’s not success.

Hurd is also visually aligning himself with Convicted Felon/Sexual Abuser/President Trump in these ads — the most lawless, corrupt president in American history who is doing more to destroy democracy and civil rights than any president in U.S. history. Trump has been violating court orders and the Constitution, openly working to rig the mid-term elections through redistricting and other means, alienating our long-time allies, using his public office to enrich himself and his family, increasing the cost of living by enacting illegal tariffs and starting illegal wars, doing end runs around Congress by issuing endless executive orders, and violating the Epstein Files Transparency Act by continuing to hide 3 million documents in the Epstein case that he is legally required to release.  And that’s only a fraction of the  nightmare that is the Trump administration. So far Trump’s actions have drawn over 700 lawsuits, many of which have resulted in injunctions stopping his actions temporarily or permanently, but Rep. Hurd hasn’t acknowledged the high cost to American taxpayers of Americans having to pick up the tab to fight this landslide of unnecessary legal cases in court. So far, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has filed or joined 65 lawsuits against the Trump administration, and secured favorable rulings in over half of these cases.  Colorado legislators were forced to create a $40 million war chest just to sue Trump over the persistent, illegal actions he’s been taken to retaliate against the state. It would be far cheaper for Coloradans, and Americans, if Trump would just simply obey the law.

But Hurd won’t talk about that.

Rep. Jeff Hurd, who represents rural Colorado, voted in favor of the budget reconciliation bill which will kick hundreds of thousands of Coloradans off health care

Hurd is spewing happy talk and openly lying to people in his ads.

We know the reality on the ground is far different than Rep. Hurd is trying to portray it. People here are struggling amid an increasingly fraught and difficult economy, and Republican elected officials like Hurd are refusing to even acknowledge their struggle, let alone do anything about it. They’re afraid to stand up to Trump, who is running roughshod over the country and single-handedly causing the inflation that is making life so much more difficult for so many Coloradans.

The question is, will we re-elect someone like Hurd, who is this comfortable openly lying to his constituents, or will we elect someone in touch with reality, who will work to bring our country back to sanity and usher in a fairer economy where people can earn a living wage, and billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share of taxes?

We’ll see before the end of 2026.
