CD-3 Rep. Jeff Hurd skips G.J. town hall meeting where over 400 constituents waited anxiously to hear from him

A standing room-only crowd packed into the First Congregational Church for a town hall meeting with CD-3 House Rep. Jeff Hurd (R), who failed to show up to the meeting.

Over 400 people packed a town hall meeting held at the First Congregational Church at 5th and Kennedy in Grand Junction for 3rd CDHouse Rep. Jeff Hurd (R) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, but Rep. Hurd failed to show. Some attendees came from as far as Montrose and some drove as much as 3 hours to attend the meeting.

Four western slope chapters Indivisible (Indivisible Grand JunctionIndivisible MontroseMountain Action Indivisible (Carbondale) and Indivisible North Fork) organized the meeting out of a sense of urgency because of the rapid-fire destructive actions Trump and Musk have been taking that are throwing thousands of Americans out of work, damaging the economy and eroding global trust in America and its longstanding international alliances.

Organizers notified Hurd about the meeting and sent him multiple invitations through phone calls, emails, and through other means within the last four days, but Hurd did not respond or show up.

By the time the meeting was held, 477 people had registered to attend.

Hurd failed to show up even though the House is currently out of session on a nine day “district work period” — scheduled time away from the Capitol in which members of Congress are supposed to return to their home districts and engage directly with their constituents. The “work period” is from February 14-23. The sanctuary of the church in which the meeting was held was filled to capacity with concerned voters hoping to hear Rep. Hurd.

Instead of coming to talk to the packed crowd of constituents anxious about the United States’ descent into authoritarianism, Rep. Hurd posted these two cheerful posts on Facebook Saturday:

Rev. Paul Ashby of the First Congregational Church was the first to speak at the Grand Junction Town Hall. Here is an excerpt of his talk:

Indivisible used the hashtags #CD3unHurd and #MuskOrUs for the event.

  1. I’ve asked this guy for a reply on four separate occasions now. Nothing. In some ways he’s worse than boobert.

  2. I have left 2 emails and asked for an acknowledgment . Still waiting for some kind of response and it’s been 5 weeks now. I guess my bank account is not large enough.

  3. He don’t think more better “bout stuff cuz red states and rebublicans don’t do no scoolin. Betcha he can’t do his gazuntas like Jethro Bodeen can do. Vote blue always !!!! Granny Clampett

  4. This is unethical and corrupt behavior only to be expected in a quickly evolving patrimonial system that wants/needs to tie to Putin. Square jaw, chest jutted out.
    It can work in Amerikkka.

  5. We need leadership in our Western Colorado community’s, someone that will support us, someone that will respond to phone calls, emails, text messages, someone willing to do their job, not someone patting to billionaires back.
Let’s all work on finding little Jeff’s replacement.

    • Have another council meeting, invite Hurd again. Have a empty chair up front. Have a large sign on that chair (or a mannnequin with a sign on it’s chest). Have YouTube, Zoom and FaceBook open channels going.
Have a meeting, asking your questions.
Why not invite his opponents? They deserve a chance to be heard. (pun intended.)

  6. “Political ambushes”?
Hurd represents a district that includes people who might have opinions he disagrees with. He appears to be so afraid of those constituents that he can’t listen to what they have to say if he thinks it might be something he doesn’t want to hear. I’ll bet that a fair percentage of those people who wanted to attend that town hall voted for him. Can’t he even stand up in front of a room and say “I hear you, thanks for your opinion”?
Nothing will make his job harder than ignoring issues and hoping they will just go away. Seems to me that Hurd lacks necessary skills and he’s just another incompetent Mesa County GOP shill.

  7. I don’t understand, why don’t Republicans hold their elected officials to higher standards? If Frisch had won, he would be talking to constituents. Meeting with “community leaders” could just be golf buddies from university/law school.

    • You could ask the same of democrats. Why did they allow their president to remain in power when it was obvious that he had lost his marbles?

Politics suck and I think you have to be somewhat/awfully twisted to even want to get involved. But at the end of the day, all Hurd really represents is a very slim majority in the House. It will be very interested to see if he can hold on to it.

When I was doing some research on him, I learned that Hurd spoke out against Trump’s pardoning of the J6rs. He does like to straddle the fence. And FWIW he was at another town hall yesterday.

And finally…”indivisible” is a formidable group and is pairing up with “50501”. They are aiming to take advantage of the Trump outrage train. They will be ones to watch.

      • I can’t even read your response after this gem of cognitive dissonance:

“Why did they allow their president to remain in power when it was obvious that he had lost his marbles?”

        Person, woman, man, camera, TV.

      • He only spoke out against the violent rioters being pardoned. It was a collective assault on our Capitol & they tried to stop the vote of the clear winner, Joseph R. Biden.
Hurd was not at another townhall yesterday, he was meeting with a small number of Alamosa local government officials. He needs to meet with constituents.

    • I have sent numerous emails on when he is having a town hall meeting here in Grand Junction but no responses?

  8. Poor Jeff…he seems way too nice for political ambushes like these.

The reverend was particularly impressive while he was promising to continue the war in Ukraine…no skin off his nose or any of those assembled. It’s funny, the Church of Christ used to be run by peaceniks.

These next years are going to be interesting for the western slope. There’s obviously going to be a concerted effort to turn it blue.

An independent Ukraine has been a US ally since 1991, when your Master’s Master attacked. They are fighting for their freedom. https://christianchronicle.org/ukraineexplainer/

You seem to take a perverse pleasure in making disingenous arguments from a “righteous” stance. It’s almost as if it’s the only “naughtiness” you feel you’re allowed to indulge in, like the patriarch of a “good Christian” home hiding an old Playboy magazine in the garage.

Gettin’ a real “Bass Player in a Dad Band” vibe with you…lots of pent-up urges, no where to indulge them.

    • Putin is the aggressor. The U.S. usually supports the efforts of countries trying to preserve democracies & fight communism. tRump is Putin’s buddy & wants to hand Ukraine over to them. If Putin attacked Mesa county, or anywhere in the US, wouldn’t it be nice if our allies stepped up to help?
Hurd wasn’t ambushed. These folks set up a townhall for him, which he should have done on his own during this scheduled break. If he cared about his constituents, he would have done this.

  9. Must be time to call Rep. Hurd Again. It doesn’t take long for GOP “lawmakers” to recognize the potency of threats and bribes that bind them to Vice President Trump. We constituents can’t match that.
