Boulder Atheists has started an effort to create a special license plate honoring the separation of church and state embodied in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Establishment Clause is one of America’s most important founding principles, and the part of the Constitution that — as long as it is honored — protect the U.S. from becoming a theocracy , like Iran, Afghanistan or Yemen. It prohibits the government from establishing a national religion or favoring one religion over others.
Under Colorado law, the process to create such a plate must be initiated by a nonprofit group. Boulder Atheists is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
Boulder Atheists write,
During this troubling and unprecedented attack on the separation of church and state during the current Presidential administration, we are working to create a license plate promoting the continued wall between religion and government. We need 3,000 signatures of Colorado residents over the age of 18.
