Delta County School District 50J, are you listening?
For the first time, the State of Colorado is offering free money (pdf) and plenty of it to school districts to teach medically-accurate, comprehensive, culturally-sensitive and inclusive sexual education.
Last May, Governor Polis signed the Youth Wellness Act, (pdf) HB19-1032, that provides the funds and requirements for eligible curriculum.
Believe it or not, HB19-1032 was sponsored in part by Montrose rancher and Republican State Senator Don Coram.
Rural public schools and schools that don’t currently offer comprehensive sex ed will get priority for grant selection.
To be eligible, Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education must include:
1. Medically-accurate information about methods to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS, and the link between human papillomavirus and cancer. These methods are correct and consistent use of abstinence, all FDA approved forms of contraception, condoms, and barrier methods.
2. Consent and promotion of healthy relationships.
3. Safe Haven Laws.
4. If instruction on pregnancy outcome options is provided, then it must cover all options including but not limited to adoptions, abortion, parenting, and safe haven laws.
No more cooked spaghetti, toaster waffles and packing tape in “sex ed” classes
Shelly Donahue, a Christian missionary brought in by the Delta County School System, uses her bag of cooked spaghetti to illustrate what girls’ brains are like in a “sex-ed class” at Delta County High School in 2016.
The law prohibits schools from teaching or endorsing any kind of religious ideology, either implicitly or explicitly. It also prohibits the use of shame-based and stigmatizing language or instructional props (think the cooked spaghetti, toaster waffles and packing tape that Delta County School District used in their “sex ed” program), and it prohibits employing gender norms or stereotypes It also prohibits excluding information on lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individuals.
Individual schools can ask for up to $50,000 per year and school districts may request up to $100,000 per year.
Funds cannot be used for programs that solely teach abstinence education.
Application admission deadline is 5:00 p.m. on March 13, 2020.

The Delta County School District in particular should be a shoe-in to get funds.
